On January 21, USAID joined local education officials, partners and beneficiaries in celebrating the completion of a resource room at each of three kindergarten schools equipped to conduct early detection and intervention services for children with special educational needs. Attending the ceremony were the Vice Director of Tay Ninh Department of Education and Training, the VietHealth Director, and representatives from the district’s Division of Education and Training and the three beneficiary schools (1/6 School, Loi Thuan, and An Hoa). The specialized resource rooms also provide counseling for parents and technical support for teachers. Over the past five years, USAID’s DISTINCT project has strengthened the capacity of roughly 1,000 teachers and 1,982 parents and caregivers to serve the special education needs of 2,247 children with disabilities.

USAID’s support for the establishment of resource rooms for kindergarten-age children is an effective approach to supporting early detection and intervention for children with special education needs, promoting inclusion and creating greater opportunities for children with disabilities to access quality education.
