2022-2027 | WFP Tajikistan | $10,000,000

Background

Tajikistan is a low-income and landlocked country of 10 million people in Central Asia. Vulnerability in Tajikistan is a result of the confluence of factors ranging from food and nutrition insecurity to economic and environmental degradation. About 20 percent of households are food insecure and 63 percent of the households adopted one or more livelihood-eroding coping strategies, making them highly susceptible to future shocks. High food insecurity prevails across the country, including Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO), Districts of Republican Subordination (DRS), Khatlon, and Sughd regions. WFP has identified 37 districts across the country that have both high rates of food insecurity and high vulnerability to natural disasters and/or high rates of food insecurity and stunting prevalence.

Goal

  • The overall objective of the project is to strengthen the food security of vulnerable food insecure populations across the country.

Anticipated Key Results

  • Key Result I: 165,000 food insecure populations from 33,000 households will benefit from unconditional food assistance.
  • Key Result II: 40,000 vulnerable populations from 8,000 households will be reached through conditional cash transfers to build resilience through creation of assets. This will be achieved through:
    • Enhanced food production through innovation - improved greenhouses (hydroponics, vertical agriculture, passive solar, thermal mass for heating);
    • Improved post-harvest food storage via root cellars, hermetic storage, dehydration, canning;
    • Investments in agroforestry to control soil erosion - fruit/nut trees along slopes both upland and along riverbanks; silvopasture (integration of trees and forage crops for livestock);
    • Undertaking capacity development in all activities including training on establishment and management of assets, and small-scale entrepreneurial skills.
  • Key Result III: Regular food market monitoring conducted in 15 regional and subregional markets, weekly reports produced and widely shared.
