This week, Administrator Samantha Power led the official U.S. delegation to the Presidential Inauguration of Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, President of the Republic of Maldives. On November 17, Administrator Power attended the presidential inauguration ceremony and reception, demonstrating U.S. support for Maldives’ independence, sovereignty, and democracy.
On November 18, Administrator Power met with President Muizzu to congratulate him on his inauguration. President Muizzu welcomed the growing partnership between the U.S. and Maldives on security, development, and global challenges such as climate change. The two leaders discussed ways in which USAID can support the Maldives to adapt to the effects of climate change, strengthen democracy and transparency, and drive equitable economic prosperity for all Maldivians.
On the sidelines of the inaugural events, Administrator Power met with Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe and discussed his country’s efforts to accelerate economic reforms and the valuable partnership between Sri Lanka and the United States. The Administrator also stressed the importance of accompanying political reforms.
