Today, Administrator Power met with the Belarusian Leader of the Democratic Opposition, Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya, to discuss recent developments in the democratic movement in Belarus and opportunities to partner with the Belarusian people to seek a better future. During the meeting, Administrator Power asked about challenges democratic activists face working inside and outside Belarus and how USAID can support civil society and journalists.
In addition, Mrs. Tsikhanouskaya discussed the growing resistance movement in Belarus to Putin’s unprovoked and unjustified war against Ukraine. She shared how the democratic forces see a strong connection between a free Belarus and a secure Ukraine. She explained that U.S. support for the Belarusian people remains incredibly important. Administrator Power thanked Mrs. Tsikhanouskaya for being a strong voice and speaking out on behalf of the Belarusian people.
