Fact Sheet: U.S. Assistance to Ethnic and Religious Minorities in Iraq

As part of the continued commitment by Vice President Pence, Secretary Pompeo, and USAID Administrator Green to support ethnic and religious minorities in Iraq as highlighted earlier this year at the first-ever Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom, the United States is proud to announce over $178 million in U.S. foreign assistance to support these vulnerable communities in Iraq.

Iraq Governance and Performance Accountability (IGPA/Takamul) Project

USAID’s Iraq Governance Performance and Accountability (IGPA, known as “Takamul” or “integration” in Arabic) project supports the Government of Iraq’s efforts to strengthen public financial management and tangibly improve the delivery of essential services through locally-led reform initiatives.

Iraq Provincial Elections Activity (IPEA)

Transparent and fair elections are an important step in the democratic process and contribute to national stability. USAID is supporting the Iraqi electoral process by building the organizational capacity of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) and fostering inclusive and responsive civic engagement by all Iraqis.

USAID is providing direct support to the Ankawa Humanitarian Committee (AHC) of the Chaldean Archdiocese of Erbil to strengthen its ability to deliver relief services for IDPs. The AHC, established by the Archdiocese of Erbil in 2020, is a non-governmental organization that seeks to provide relief programs for displaced persons.

Supporting the Return of Displaced Populations in Ninewa Plain and Western Ninewa

USAID is supporting the return of displaced populations from ethnic and religious minorities through an integrated, multi-sectoral approach that tailors services to the unique needs of the communities that call this region home.

The Marla Ruzicka Iraqi War Victims Fund

Body
Marla Ruzicka was a passionate humanitarian who worked on behalf of civilian war victims in Iraq. In 2005, Marla was killed in Baghdad by a car bomb on her way back from visiting Iraqi families who lost relatives due to conflict. Though Marla’s life was tragically cut short, her memory and dedication to helping war victims in Iraq live on through the Marla Ruzicka Iraqi War Victims Fund, championed and funded through appropriations by the U.S. Congress. 

Transitional Assistance to Internally Displaced Persons in Erbil

Body
Through a joint partnership with the Archdiocese of Erbil, USAID is supporting the sustainable reintegration of internally displaced persons in northern Iraq.
