Responsible Minerals Trade Fact Sheet

Body
The program works to break the link between conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and minerals trade, in coordination with other U.S. government agencies, the Congolese government, donors, the private sector, and civil society.

Democracy, Human Rights and Governance Fact Sheet

Body
USAID programs strengthen the ability of the Government of the DRC and civil society organizations to deliver basic services, mobilize domestic resources, and encourage greater citizen participation in political processes. Our assistance supports free, fair, and credible elections, improves transparent and accountable government processes and rule of law, and improves access to information so that citizens may participate fully in the democratic process, and make more informed decisions. DRG programs contribute to citizen’s empowerment to hold institutions accountable and effectiveness of public and private institutions to deliver public services. By doing so, DRG programs improve the responsiveness of public institutions to citizens’ needs.

Peace and Security

Body
USAID/Central Africa builds foundations for durable peace in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the Central African Republic (CAR), and the Republic of Congo by supporting community-led efforts to manage, mitigate, and prevent conflict, countering armed groups that prey on civilians, and providing holistic services to survivors of gender-based violence. USAID/Central Africa Peace and Security staff also work across the portfolio to ensure that investments in other development sectors are sensitive to complex conflict dynamics, advance peace processes, and Do No Harm.

Sexual and Gender Based Violence

Body
Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) is a human rights violation, a public health challenge, and a barrier to civic, social, political, and economic participation. Preventing and responding to SGBV is a cornerstone of the Agency’s commitment to advancing gender equality. Since 2002, the United States Government has been a major donor in the response to, and prevention of, SGBV in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Inclusive Economic Growth

Body
USAID seeks to accelerate inclusive economic growth by enabling Congolese businesses to grow from micro- and small enterprises to medium-sized enterprises, and by strengthening their market linkages to local and international markets. USAID invests in key aspects of the Congolese economy—agriculture, minerals, and energy—to reduce poverty and eliminate food insecurity by reducing dependence on food imports.

Forests for the Future

Body
Entrusting the management of tropical forests to the people who live in and depend on them is the fairest and most effective means of protecting them. However, until recently, communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) had no possibility of securing legal rights to their rainforest home. Building on the passage of landmark community forest legislation, this project aims to lay the foundations for community-based forest management in DRC, by empowering local and indigenous communities to secure their rights and thrive through sustainable livelihoods.

GESI NI NISHATI KWA KILA MTU (USAID-FUNDED GAS IS AFFORDABLE ALTERNATIVES TO CHARCOAL ACTIVITY)

Body
USAID is supporting the innovative, technology-led initiative to reduce charcoal-related deforestation around Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in partnership with BBOXX Ltd. In the DRC, energy demand drives 94 percent of wood harvesting. Consumption of charcoal increased in cities because of population growth, lack of livelihood alternatives, high unemployment rates, and low enforcement of forest management legislation.
