The YALI alumni network in Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), with the financial support of the Pulitzer Foundation and in collaboration with L’Observatoire Congolais pour la Gouvernance Locale, organized a training and capacity building session aimed at strengthening the skills of 50 young people engaged in the fight against global warming.

The objective was to equip these young activists with effective strategies to counter deforestation within the Congo Basin, a region of major ecological importance.

Participants gained an in-depth understanding of the drivers of deforestation, identified the main threats to Congo Basin ecosystems, and learned about the legal and institutional frameworks for forest protection in the DRC, to better understand local laws and regulations.

The participants were also introduced to environmental advocacy techniques, an essential tool to raise awareness and mobilize public opinion in favor of forest protection. Trainees examined two case studies covering different mechanisms and impacts of deforestation.

The first explored deforestation in the Mayombe forest, highlighting the ecological and economic consequences of its destruction. The second case study focused on the human and ecological impact resulting from the destruction of sacred forests in Central Africa, thus highlighting the cultural dimension of the fight against deforestation.

Ultimately, this initiative led to the creation of a network of 50 young ambassadors and activists from the Congo Basin who are able to collaborate to preserve this vital ecosystem.
