USAID partnered with Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development from 2021 to 2023 to carry out one of the largest national biodiversity and threat baseline surveys ever in Southeast Asia. Utilizing camera traps, the study covered 21 protected areas and the recently released data confirms previous assumptions that most large and medium sized carnivores are either in such low numbers as to be unviable, or have disappeared completely.

This survey, and coordinated efforts to use the data generated for decision making, represents an unparalleled step toward the monitoring and conserving of Vietnam’s remaining biodiversity.
