Large-scale seizures of illegal wildlife products confiscated at Vietnam's borders show that the country plays a key role in wildlife trade originating from Africa. On June 22-23, USAID’s Saving Threatened Wildlife project collaborated with the Department of International Cooperation and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters, Vietnam’s Supreme People's Procuracy (SPP), to host a workshop on “Strengthening international cooperation in countering wildlife trafficking.”

The workshop brought together over 70 representatives and leaders from law enforcement and judicial agencies, including police, customs, the court and procuracy, as well as related international and local organizations. The workshop generated recommendations to enhance law enforcement related to illegal wildlife trade nationally and enhance cooperation between Vietnam and African nations.

Gathering information from source countries through international cooperation is essential in helping build the prosecutors’ case and provide a more robust legal foundation for authorities to handle and prosecute wildlife traffickers.
