In northern Ghana, relations between the Fulbe and non-Fulbe ethnic groups are often marked by tensions related to the social and political marginalization of the Fulbe minority. Conflicts often stem from farmer-herder disputes.

While the Fulbe contribute significantly to the local economy, many Ghanaians lack a nuanced understanding of them. Since 2021, OTI’s Littorals Regional Initiative has worked in northern Ghana to address drivers of conflict and instability, prioritizing Fulbe inclusion through efforts such as the creation of mediation committees, engaging community leaders, and establishing economic support. OTI’s engagement approach has led to the peaceful resolution of more than 81 farmer-herder disputes, with no violent conflict in target areas since the establishment of the mediation committees.
