About Us

More than two decades after the end of apartheid, South Africa plays a key economic and political role on the continent. There are also many challenges, including unemployment, HIV/AIDS, crime, and corruption. USAID programs seek to provide HIV/AIDS care, prevention and treatment; strengthen small and medium-sized enterprises; create employment; promote basic education; and combat gender-based violence. Since South Africa and the United States share development objectives throughout the African continent, USAID supports South African regional development initiatives through its trilateral assistance program. For FY 2014, total U.S. foreign assistance to South Africa was $486.2M. Read more about our programs in the following sub-sectors under "Our Work"
