Untapping Somalia's natural resources

Somalia's coastline is the longest in continental Africa and boasts untapped resources for economic growth, including diverse fish species. Through the Growth, Enterprise, Employment, and Livelihoods (GEEL) project, USAID has supported more than 50 Somali fishing companies to stabilize catch rates, improve economic return, and streamline internationally-accepted processing and hygiene standards through technical assistance, trainings, and export market linkages.

The West African Ebola outbreak of 2014, infected over 28,600 people in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia and killed 11,300. In response, USAID led a U.S. whole-of-government effort to contain the disease and reduced the number of Ebola cases to zero.
Aberu's Savings Plan

Meet Aberu Mamo, a farmer in Ethiopia. With USAID's support, villages like Aberu's are becoming more resilient to recurring drought, helping break the cycle of crisis and reduce the need for emergency food aid. Through the Feed the Future GRAD project, USAID trained farmers like Aberu to diversify income, leverage loans and increase savings. "The money saved can be used to pass the worst time," Aberu says.
