On September 30, Administrator Samantha Power met with International Organization for Migration (IOM) Director General António Vitorino to discuss urgent humanitarian priorities, including the situations in Afghanistan, Central America, and Haiti.

During their meeting, Administrator Power thanked Director General Vitorino for IOM’s strong collaboration and partnership with USAID. They spoke about recent collaboration in Haiti during the response to the August 14 earthquake. Looking ahead, they also highlighted the need for continued work in Haiti, including to address ongoing displacement generated by heightened insecurity and to receive and reintegrate returning Haitian migrants. Administrator Power also thanked Director General Vitorino for IOM’s partnership in helping to address the root causes of irregular migration in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.

Administrator Power reiterated the United States’ commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to vulnerable people in Afghanistan as long as we and our partners are safely able.
