Today, U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Samantha Power met virtually with Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok to discuss USAID’s support for the people of Sudan as the country continues its democratic transformation and reintegration into the global economy following its revolution in 2019.
Administrator Power congratulated Prime Minister Hamdok on Sudan’s completion of the steps needed to qualify for debt relief under the enhanced Heavily Indebted Poor Countries initiative. Administrator Power and Prime Minister Hamdok discussed USAID’s continuing commitment to the Sudanese people, including through enabling the civilian-led government to demonstrate progress on key transition goals, strengthening civic engagement, and supporting newly independent media.
In addition to providing more than $284 million in fiscal year 2021 assistance to meet humanitarian needs in Sudan, USAID supports a safety net program to mitigate economic hardships and is providing wheat to help fill critical gaps in Sudan’s supply. USAID also continues to provide assistance to civil society and supports local partners working to increase governmental accountability and improve public confidence and trust in the integrity of Sudan’s electoral processes.
