Today, Administrator Samantha Power met with Ecuador President Guillermo Lasso to discuss U.S. support for the people of Ecuador and a range of shared priorities, including addressing citizen security, improving health and nutrition, expanding opportunities for young people and those living in rural areas, and advancing democratic governance and anti-corruption initiatives. President Lasso underscored his strong commitment to combating insecurity and investing in Ecuador’s development, and the President and Administrator Power discussed how USAID can grow its partnerships and work throughout the country in support of these objectives.

Administrator Power recognized President Lasso for his prioritization of addressing chronic childhood malnutrition and shared USAID’s intent to work with the Government of Ecuador on these efforts, including through the initial provision of $5 million for locally-driven efforts to address malnutrition by improving sanitation and access to water in rural areas. The Administrator also congratulated President Lasso on Ecuador soon beginning a two-year term on the United Nations Security Council.
