Today, Administrator Samantha Power met with democracy activist and former Hong Kong legislator Nathan Law, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Democracy Council (HKDC) Kai Ping Leung, and HKDC Board Member Alex Chow. They discussed the assault on Hong Kong’s democratic institutions, and Beijing’s imposition of the National Security Law, which has undermined free speech and civic participation since it came into effect in 2020. Administrator Power thanked Mr. Law for his contributions to the Summit for Democracy and expressed strong U.S. support for Hong Kongers who are committed to advancing democratic principles.
