From August 13 through 16, Administrator Samantha Power will travel to Papua New Guinea and Fiji to emphasize the U.S. government's commitment to the region and highlight USAID's efforts in the Pacific Islands to make an enduring, positive impact across the diverse countries where USAID works.
Delivering on President Biden’s 2022 promise at the U.S.-Pacific Islands Summit, Administrator Power will officially reestablish the USAID/Pacific Islands Mission in Suva, Fiji, and formally elevate USAID’s presence in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, to a Country Representative Office covering Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu. At these launch events, Administrator Power will underscore the United States government’s commitment to advancing a more resilient Pacific Islands region, one that can better respond and adapt to climate and disaster impacts and economic shocks, with strong political systems that champion democratic values, good governance, and human rights as well as promote equity and inclusion for all.
In addition to the launch events, Administrator Power will visit USAID initiatives in both Papua New Guinea and Fiji, and meet with government officials; USAID partners; local leaders and communities, including women and youth; and private sector partners.
While in Fiji, Administrator Power will deliver remarks at this year’s Chiefs of Defense Conference, co-hosted by the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.
