Today, Administrator Samantha Power spoke with the President of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso. The two discussed the positive and important bilateral relationship between the United States and Ecuador, and the longstanding partnership between the people of the two countries. Administrator Power conveyed to President Lasso the United States’ appreciation for his ongoing collaboration on shared priorities, and she welcomed the progress our two countries have made on issues such as child malnutrition, rural connectivity, environmental conservation, citizen security, and regional migration.

The Administrator conveyed condolences for the recent natural disasters that have impacted Ecuador and acknowledged the political and security challenges the country is facing. She reiterated the United States’ commitment to Ecuador’s democracy, security, and prosperity, and conveyed confidence in Ecuador’s democratic institutions and processes. Administrator Power and President Lasso discussed USAID’s longstanding commitment to supporting democratic principles and to fostering inclusive economic development while protecting Ecuador’s precious natural resources and biodiversity. They committed to continue building on the decades of progress the two countries have made together to best deliver for the Ecuadorian people.
