BACKGROUND
Mozambique stands poised to reap the benefits from an abundance of hydrocarbon, mineral, and other natural resources, yet the government faces challenges related to transparency, accountability, inclusion, and participation. Over the past two decades, civil society and the media have demanded greater government transparency and accountability. However, significant challenges persist, including harassment of journalists and self-censorship. To increase influence and accountability, civil society and the media will need to inform citizens and advocate effectively on increasingly complex economic governance issues at national and local levels.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
USAID REAJIR aims to increase accountability in natural resource management and other economic governance issues by improving Mozambican journalists’ skills in investigating and reporting on these topics. The program focuses on increasing investigative journalistic skills, incentivizing media outlets and journalist teams to produce quality investigative pieces, and improving support systems for investigative journalists.  It provides support to at least 50 journalists and 6 media outlets nationwide, including at least 10 journalists and 3 media outlets from the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Nampula, and Zambézia.
