U.S. Feed The Future Initiative Expanded To Zambia In Response To Growing Global Food Security Crisis

At the G7 Leaders’ Summit in June 2022, President Biden announced that the United States is expanding Feed the Future, the U.S. government’s global hunger and food security initiative, to reach eight new African countries, including Zambia. This expansion will help directly address the impacts of recent shocks to global food security and nutrition.

On the final day of her visit to Malawi, Administrator Power toured Pyxus Agriculture Limited Malawi. Pyxus is a company that works with Malawian smallholder farmers focused on agriculture commercialization and innovation.

Administrator Samantha Power Visits Lilongwe, Malawi

  • July 2, 2022

On July 1, Administrator Samantha Power arrived in Lilongwe, Malawi. She began her visit by holding a town hall with U.S. Embassy colleagues alongside U.S. Ambassador to Malawi David Young and Acting USAID Mission Director in Malawi Melissa Francis. Administrator Power thanked U.S. Embassy personnel for continuing to strengthen the U.S.-Malawi bilateral relationship, despite challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and economic crisis exacerbated by Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified war against Ukraine. Administrator Power also met separately with USAID’s Malawian staff to thank them for their dedication and commitment to strengthening the U.S.-Malawi relationship.

USAID Announces $35 Million in Agriculture Support for Malawi

Today, the U.S. government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), announced $35 million, subject to appropriations, in additional support for Malawi’s economic recovery. This five-year project will focus on empowering women and youth, expanding agricultural commercialization, increasing household and community resilience, and addressing the impacts from a changing climate. The new project will generate jobs and incomes for smallholder farmers and increase agricultural and food exports for the country, and is designed to complement the Millennium Challenge Corporation’s efforts in Malawi to reduce poverty through economic growth. USAID expects to award the new activity in the coming months as part of its support for Malawi 2063, Malawi’s vision to become a self-reliant, upper-middle income country over the next four decades.

USAID Announces $74 Million for Early Grade Reading in Malawi

The U.S. government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is supporting Malawi’s vision for early grade literacy through the new Next Generation (NextGen) early grade reading project. This investment of $74 million over the next five years, subject to appropriations, will improve the delivery of high-quality early grade reading instruction in all of Malawi’s over 5,700 public primary schools nationwide. Since 2015, the U.S. government has invested more than $136 million in Malawi’s early grade reading efforts. 

USAID Announces Up to $46 Million for Malawi Private Sector Engagement Initiative “Let Them Grow Healthy”

The U.S. government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), announced the launch of Let Them Grow Healthy (Tiwalere) in Malawi today. Tiwalere is a five-year, $46 million initiative, subject to appropriations, in support of the Government of Malawi’s National Multi-Sector Nutrition Policy. It is anticipated that USAID will invest $23 million and that the private sector will match this by also contributing $23 million.
