USAID Supports the Ministry of Health to Expand COVID-19 Vaccination in Lao PDR

Vientiane Capital, June 29, 2022 – The United States through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) officially handed over cold chain and IT equipment worth around U.S. $150,000 to the Ministry of Health (MOH) to further expand COVID-19 vaccination coverage in Lao PDR, especially in hard-to-reach communities.

Isobel Coleman, Deputy Administrator (DA) for Policy and Programming for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), visited Laos on May 13-14, 2022.  This visit reaffirmed USAID commitment to the U.S.-Lao Comprehensive Partnership, inaugurated by former President Barack Obama and President Bounnhang Vorachit in 2016.

USAID Announced $5.6 Million to Address the Impacts of COVID-19 on Education and Economic Growth in Laos

Isobel Coleman, Deputy Administrator (DA) for Policy and Programming for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), announced US $5.6 million in additional assistance to address the impacts of COVID-19 on economic growth and primary education in Lao PDR on May 13, 2022. 

USAID and FAO Handover Personal Protective Equipment to the Department of Livestock and Fisheries to Ensure Safety of Veterinarians and Animal Health Workers

On April 25, 2022, the United States through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) handed over Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and disinfectant materials to Mrs. Vilayphone Vorraphim, Director General of the Department of Livestock and Fisheries, at the office of the Department of Livestock and Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. The support will ensure the safety of veterinarians and animal health workers investigating animal diseases in the field and aid in preventing disease spread. The generous support was made possible by the U.S. Government through USAID under the Global Health Security Project, implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

On April 20, U.S. Ambassador to Lao PDR Dr. Peter M. Haymond joined Vice Minister of Health Dr. Sanong Thongsana to officially launch the Continuous Professional Development Training Facility for Health Professionals at the Center for Medical Rehabilitation (CMR).  The ceremony also marked the official handover of rehabilitation equipment to the CMR and Ministry of Health (MOH).
