From April 6 to June 18, 2021, the Central Asia Media Program held its second Media Law Marathon, a series of online lectures for law students in Kazakhstan. The lecture series aims to build a network of media law specialists across the country. The training was organized by the Legal Media Center, a longtime partner of Internews.
Thirty-seven participants from cities across Kazakhstan learned about local laws, international standards, and practical tools on internet freedom, defamation disputes, copyright, protecting children’s rights in media, and protecting personal data.
In her remarks at the training, Olga Didenko, Regional Expert on Media Law at the Central Asia Media Program said, “We believe that our training will help to strengthen the legal environment and implementation of international standards in Kazakhstan.”
Following two months of theoretical education, these law students have developed their own projects on media law, data security, and children’s rights. The three best projects received financial support and will continue to be mentored through the end of August, 2021.
