Through this project, USAID is supporting Government of Pakistan for the repair and rehabilitation of the Guddu Thermal Power Station (GTPS) located in Kashmore district of Sindh. Owned and operated by the Central Power Generation Company, Limited (CPGCL). Upon completion, the project will increase the power station's generation capacity and will restore up to 75 megawatts, enough to supply electricity to approximately 694,650 people.

Objectives

The main objective of the project is to restore the efficiency of the power plant lost due to the aging of equipment.

Main Activities
  • An initial assessment of the generation facility to determine the technical and commercial feasibility of the project.
  • Rehabilitate two gas turbines and one steam turbine at GTPS to restore 75 megawatts of generation capacity.
  • Improve the reliability and availability of the power station resulting in increased plant efficiency and improved power generation.
  • Procure additional equipment to aid the rehabilitation effort and extend the life of the plant.
  • Improve the heat rate for the plant with improved efficiency.
Results To Date
  • Procured equipment and services worth $19.1 Million to aid the rehabilitation effort. Added 80 MWs
  • Successfully rehabilitated the two gas turbines and one steam turbine.
  • Test runs are being conducted on the rehabilitated turbines to ensure the reliability of the Combined Cycle Plant.
  • An environmental mitigation and monitoring plan has been developed and implemented to ensure that the project adheres to Pakistani and U.S. environmental rules and regulations.
