Access to modern energy services improves people’s well-being across a wide array of sectors including health, education and economic growth. However, about 2.2 billion people in the developing world still lack reliable access to electricity. Here is how USAID helps provide a better future for people around the globe through greater access to reliable electricity.

Good Governance and Management

USAID works with governments and utilities to improve electricity sector oversight, management and operations to ensure a financially healthy sector, attract much-needed investment and expand access to reliable and affordable service.

Sufficient Generation

Energy supplies can’t meet demand in most developing countries. USAID brings more generation online by supporting long-term system planning and procurement of cost-competitive and clean energy sources.

Reliable Transmission

USAID expands transmission capacity and strengthens grid design and operations to enable grids to take on more clean energy supplies.

Efficient Distribution

USAID works with power utilities to modernize their operations, enhance revenue collection, improve efficiencies, and provide more reliable and affordable service.

Affordable Consumption

Inefficient lighting, appliances and buildings mean high costs for industry, businesses, and households. USAID promotes energy efficiency policies, standards and programs to reduce consumption and lower costs.

USAID supports energy enterprises and business model development to deliver off-grid energy solutions to remote areas unable to access the grid in the near term.
