Alyson McFarland joined USAID in 2009. Her first assignment was a two-year tour as the USAID representative on the Hungarian PRT in Baghlan Province, Afghanistan. Ms. McFarland served in Mongolia as the Program Officer and then South Sudan with Food For Peace. Following Korean language training, she was the Director of the Office of Democracy, Health and Social Reform in Armenia. Ms. McFarland was then the USAID Provincial Director in Lahore, Pakistan and most recently was the USAID Representative for Botswana. Ms. McFarland joined the USAID Burkina Faso team as Country Representative in May 2022.

Ms. McFarland began her career with the Department of State as a PMF in the Bureau of Arms Control.  She is originally from upstate New York and holds a BA in Political Science from Gettysburg College and an MA in Asian Studies from the University of Hawaii.
