Through its Judicial System Strengthening Activity, implemented by the East-West Management Institute (EWMI), the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) provides technical assistance for ongoing reforms to the judicial system of Uzbekistan. The activity works closely with the Supreme Court of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Supreme Judicial Council, the Higher School of Judges and other key stakeholders in the national judiciary and justice sectors.

GOAL AND OBJECTIVES

The four-year activity aims to strengthen the administration of justice, the professionalism and integrity of the judiciary, and the openness and public trust in the justice system of Uzbekistan, in collaboration with its national partners. This work directly supports the objectives of the New Uzbekistan Development Strategy for 2022-2026, and builds on the 2019 recommendations of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers.

The activity focuses on implementation of international best practices, technical support for court performance management systems, judicial training, gender equality in the judiciary, strengthening Uzbekistan’s engagement with the international justice community, and improving communication among the judicial system, the media, and Uzbekistan’s public.

As of August 2022, JSSA has trained 54 judges and judicial personnel as well as 58 representatives from civil society organizations, governmental institutions and universities, for a total of 112 citizens (76 female participants, 36 male participants).

The activity is also leveraging the global expertise of its international partners—the International Commission of Jurists and Street Law, Inc.—to support activities related to judicial training and civic legal education, respectively.
