BACKGROUND

Under the USAID-funded Meeting Targets and Maintaining Epidemic Control (EpiC) project, FHI 360 supports HIV epidemic control and the COVID-19 response in Tajikistan.

GOALS

Goal One - Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

Deliver efficient, affordable, results-based technical assistance and direct service delivery tailored to context and epidemiology that is effective in surging, scaling, and sustaining HIV services and systems for long-term epidemic control.

Goal Two - COVID-19 Response

Reduce morbidity and mortality from COVID-19, mitigate transmission, and strengthen health systems, including to prevent, detect, and respond to pandemic threats.

KEY - RESULTS

HIV

Project duration: October 2020 – December 2025

Achievements during 2022:

  • Contributed to 46% of all new HIV cases found in the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief sites (298 out of 642).
  • Established a unique Community Health Center “Nukta” in the Sughd region which offers a wide range of HIV prevention, counseling and testing services, including treatment dispensary, blood sampling for viral load tests, referral to pre-exposure prophylaxis.
  • Supported sustainable financing of Community Based Organizations (CBO) by scaling-up and implementation of state social contracting in the field of HIV through participatory Technical Working Group meeting and capacity building of 7 CBO’s.

COVID-19

Project duration: August 2021 – June 2023

Conducted:

  • seven cascade trainings on COVID-19 case management and infection prevention and control (IPC) for 274 healthcare workers (143 doctors and 131 nurses) from 51 healthcare facilities (HCF) from all over the country, February - July 2022;
  • five regional trainings on “Resuscitation aspects of patients with COVID-19” for 96 for resuscitators and anesthesiologists from 39 HCF from all over the country, July - November 2022;
  • In February 2022, developed 6th edition of the COVID-19 Clinical Protocol, printed and handed over to the Ministry of Health and Social Protection (MoHSP) in 3000 copies for further distribution to medical facilities of the country,.
  • Developed a clinical protocol for management of hypoxic patients and post COVID-19 clinical support and rehabilitation guideline and submitted to the MoHSP for approval.
  • On October 4, 2022, established a Resource Center for Safe Oxygen Use at the Tajik Technical University named after academician M.S. Osimi in Dushanbe aiming at training the specialists and strengthening the capacity of medical facilities in ensuring the safe use of oxygen equipment.
