Energy Sector Women’s Leadership Initiative

Training the Next Generation of Women Energy Leaders

In keeping with the African proverb, “Educate a woman and you educate a nation,” Power Africa established the Energy Sector Women’s Leadership Initiative (ESWLI) to address the shortage of women leaders in the industry.

Launched in Nigeria, ESWLI training courses equip women with essential skills and knowledge to thrive and grow in their careers. In 2022, more than 700 talented junior-, mid-, and senior-level women energy professionals from Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone graduated from the program.

Nearly one-third of ESWLI alumni were promoted or accepted new positions, and many graduates negotiated higher salaries and began mentoring their colleagues.

Download the materials below to replicate this training at your organization, and hear from Marwa, Idara, and Ojinika to learn more about ESWLI and its real-world impact.

MARWA KHOURY

Marwa Khoury started her career as a Customer Service Representative in an electricity utility company in Nigeria. Her career goal was to be a Human Resource Manager in a transmission organization.

In 2021, Marwa participated in the ESWLI training. Propelled by her new career insight from the ESWLI training, Marwa applied for her dream job and leveraged her new skills to ace the interview!

She is now a Human Resource Manager in an energy transmission organization.

OJINIKA MBA-KALU

Emerging women leaders like Ojinika Mba-Kalu completed our leadership skills development course, and with her completion certificate was able to provide proof of a previous leadership training. She was then selected as one of the 26 women globally for a leadership fellowship.

Women like Ojinika continue to inspire us and we look forward to more women leaders in Nigeria’s energy sector!

IDARA EKWO

Idara Ekwo, a Project Manager and Lawyer in the Nigerian Energy Sector, participated in our ESWLI Aspire course. The course is one of the learning opportunities under the ESWLI, which aims to bridge the gender leadership gap in the male-dominated energy sector.

Since completing the two-week course, Idara has optimized her LinkedIn profile, received an opportunity to speak at the World Hydrogen Conference in the Netherlands, and leads the ESWLI Alumni Network.
