YALI RLC East Africa alumni played leading roles at the just concluded African Climate Summit in Nairobi, Kenya. Elizabeth Wathuti, a 2020 RLC alumna and a renowned Kenyan environmental and climate activist, as well as the founder of the Green Generation Initiative, served as the lead coordinator for the Africa Youth Assembly for Climate Action. During the opening ceremony of the youth assembly, Elizabeth also delivered remarks on behalf of youth. Yared Abera, a 2017 RLC alumnus, a youth climate leader from Ethiopia and the founder and director of The Youth Print, led the official Ethiopian youth delegation and was an official negotiator on behalf of the Ethiopian government. Yared and Elizabeth were integral members of the core team responsible for drafting the youth declaration, which they presented to Moussa Faki Mahamat, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, and Kenya's President William Ruto.
