Mining operations in Matam, in the Department of Kanel, particularly in the communes of Hamady Ounaré, Ndendory and Orkadiéré used to be received with hostilities by the community. Many residents lost their homes due to the expansion of this industry in the area. The mining companies were not complying with tax payments that could provide much needed support for local public services.

Carl Anderson serves as the Deputy Mission Director for USAID Guinea & Sierra Leone Mission. Prior to becoming the Deputy Mission Director for USAID Guinea & Sierra Leone Mission, Mr. Anderson was the Country Representative in Benin from 2019 to 2023. He led teams in the Iraq and Egypt Democracy, Governance and Economic Opportunities Offices. He was also the Deputy Director for the Democracy and Governance Offices in Afghanistan and Haiti. Mr. Anderson joined the Foreign Service in 2011, after working for USAID in the Democracy and Governance offices in Haiti and Zimbabwe from 2008 to 2011.
Before joining USAID, Mr. Anderson held management positions with the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, and Pennsylvania Office of the Inspector General. He also worked in Bosnia, Albania, Bulgaria and Haiti on elections, rule of law, and justice projects.
Mr. Anderson received a B.A. in International Relations from McGill University and a J.D. from the Saint Louis University School of Law.

In 2006, violence erupted on the hills of Mount Elgon in western Kenya. Thousands of people were left displaced, causing the formation of the Sabaot Land Defense Force, a local militia to fight for land rights. The militia injured, killed, maimed, and sexually assaulted women and girls opposed to the tactics employed by the militant group. The Kenyan Defense Forces quelled the insurgency with a similar level of violence, forcing ex-militia youth to flee into the forest in fear of their lives.

The natural region of southern Senegal has always been characterized by its lush vegetation, and among others, beautiful stands of palm groves. This is the case in Bambaly, in the administrative region of Sédhiou. Palm trees line the shallows and along the Casamance River. Threatened by abusive exploitation in the early 2000’s, the palm groves were the subject of management watched by the populations. The latter have initiated a management method called "thon" (which in the local language means the periodic deprivation of exploitation of the palm grove to allow it to mature. And, fun fact; it also means “tuna” in French).
