Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has issued a new set of regulations for the management and traceability of forest products including a system of self-monitoring by forest owners and businesses. However, it does not have systems in place to monitor and evaluate efforts to stop the illegal logging of timber. USAID provided the technical assistance to develop procedures for inspections of forests and logging companies to make sure they are complying with Vietnam's Timber Legality Assurance System and other international commitments.

The new requirements will take effect on February 15, 2023, and will improve the ability of law enforcement to reduce illegal logging in Vietnam. This work enhances sustainable forest management and reduces CO2 emissions in Vietnam.
