The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has selected RTI International (RTI), a U.S. non-profit research and international development institute, to lead a new five-year 31.5 billion FCFA project that will strengthen the capacity of Senegal’s health system at the district and regional levels.

The USAID Integrated District Health project, developed in close collaboration with Senegal’s Ministry of Health and other stakeholders, will focus on increasing equitable health services and expanding universal health coverage in five regions of Senegal: Diourbel, Kédougou, Kolda, Sédhiou, and Tambacounda. The award will focus on improving malaria, maternal and child health, family planning, nutrition, and water, sanitation, and hygiene services.

The Integrated District Health activity will work at all levels of the health system to increase access to health care, improve the quality of services, and increase engagement of communities, civil society organizations, the private sector and local governments in the oversight and management of health care.

The program will also give grants to facilitate district-level plans and activities, and to incentivize the development of locally-developed, scalable innovations that can transform Senegal’s health system.

USAID provides over 34 billion FCFA annually in support of Senegal’s health sector. With our support, in the past 15 years, Senegal’s infant mortality rate has decreased by more than half, and the mortality rate among children under five years old has dropped by more than two-thirds. USAID has been a key development champion in Senegal for 60 years, working with individuals, communities and the government to improve everyday lives.
