The United States Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), represented by Mr. Peter Trenchard, USAID/Senegal Mission Director, signed a Memorandum of Partnership (MOP) with Mr. Abdoulaye Sene, appointed by the Government of Senegal and the World Water Council as the Executive Secretary of the 9th World Water Forum. The MOP establishes that USAID will provide technical assistance, coordination, and logistics expertise to assist Senegal in organizing the 9th World Water Forum, which will take place in Dakar from March 21 - 26.

The World Water Forum is the world's largest event on water. The forum has been organized every three years since 1997 by the World Water Council, the founder of the event, in partnership with a host country. The 9th Forum in Dakar, overseen by Senegal’s Ministry of Water and Sanitation, will be the first time the event is hosted in sub-Saharan Africa. Along with USAID, many other donors are sponsoring the event, supplementing the approximate $24 million Senegal has committed.

The World Water Forum will bring together over 1,000 diverse participants from governments, bilateral/multilateral institutions, academia, civil society and the private sector, among others.  It provides a unique platform where the international water community and key decision makers can collaborate and make long-term commitments to global water challenges. The 9th Forum will focus on “Water security for peace and development” and is expected to contribute to strengthening the ability of the entire world to respond to the challenges of water and sanitation.

Through this partnership USAID demonstrates a commitment to Senegal’s priority goals under the Plan for an Emerging Senegal (PSE) and the ensuing Second Adjusted and Accelerated Priority Action Plan (PAP2A).  Senegal was designated a Water for the World high priority country by the U.S. Global Water Strategy in 2020 resulting in increased funding for water and sanitation programs. Through these programs USAID supports Senegal’s efforts to achieve universal access to water and sanitation. USAID/Senegal’s Country Development Cooperation Strategy includes improving the reliable availability of quality water as an essential component of the objective to increase inclusive and sustainable economic growth in the country.
