Feed the Future is the United States’ global hunger and food security initiative.  On March 24, the Feed the Future Senegal Dundël Suuf project handed over soil fertility maps to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Equipment (MAER).

Dundël Suuf (“feed the soil” in Wolof), is a three-year $8.5 million project funded by USAID. This project contributes to the Senegalese government's goal of sustainably increasing agricultural production to achieve self-sufficiency in staple items and the export of surplus horticultural products.

After two years of implementation, Dundël Suuf and partners collected and analyzed over 2,000 soil samples throughout Senegal. With this information, Dundël Suuf created 15 national maps which provide information on Senegal’s soil fertility profile. Having a clear understanding of soil deficiency helps actors develop appropriate fertilizer formulas to cover the needs of crops.

On March 24 at the King Fahd Hotel in Dakar, USAID handed over the soil fertility maps to the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Equipment, Mr. Moussa Balde. The ceremony included participation from the USAID Acting Mission Director Ying Hsu and Dr. Oumou Camara, Regional Director of Le Centre International pour le Développement des Engrais (IFDC), the implementing partner of Feed the Future Senegal Dundël Suuf project. This event highlighted and reinforced the 60 years of partnership between the Government of Senegal and the United States Government.
