Today, Administrator Samantha Power met with Major General (Retd) James Cowan, CEO of the HALO Trust. Administrator Power and General Cowan discussed the threat of landmines and other unexploded ordnance (UXO) in conflict and post-conflict settings around the world and opportunities for USAID and HALO to align ongoing efforts in Ukraine and other areas where UXO are present.
Administrator Power discussed USAID’s multifaceted support to address the challenges related to Ukraine’s economic recovery, particularly in the agriculture sector. They also discussed HALO tools and assets to scope and identify landmines in areas re-captured by Ukraine to inform programming and investments in agriculture. Administrator Power and Gen. Cowan pledged to closely coordinate, alongside the Department of State, on demining efforts in Ukraine.
