Press Release

Today, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is pleased to recognize Transgender Day of Visibility, a day dedicated to celebrating the vibrant and diverse international transgender community while raising awareness of the discrimination that transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people face worldwide.

The pride, power, and resilience of transgender people around the world is a lesson and inspiration for all people. Transgender individuals and other gender minorities exist in every society and culture around the world, and throughout history, and their accomplishments and contributions are wide ranging and impressive. Today and every day, USAID celebrates and honors the courage it takes to live authentically, while recognizing the work to be done to create a world in which every person can live and thrive openly and safely. Despite facing unique challenges and adversity on the basis of personal identity and expression, transgender people and communities around the world continue to bravely and tirelessly lead the call for full and unequivocal equality.

USAID reaffirms a strong commitment to promoting a world in which all people are treated with respect and dignity, and live without fear no matter who they are or whom they love. Global security and stability are strongest when the most marginalized in society are guaranteed equal protection and opportunity. USAID applauds all of its transgender and gender minority staff, and will continue to work with and for them to promote safe and inclusive work environments at home and abroad.
