While in the Dominican Republic, Deputy Administrator Isobel Coleman met with senior Dominican government officials including President Luis Abinader, Foreign Minister Robero Álvarez, Minister of the Presidency Joel Santos, and Minister of Industry and Trade Victor Bisonó. During her visit, the Deputy Administrator highlighted the strong and expanding partnership between the United States and Dominican Republic, and the two countries’ shared commitment to strong, accountable democratic governance that delivers security and prosperity, a USAID priority under our Democracy Delivers Initiative. Additionally, the Deputy Administrator met with USAID staff and representatives from civil society, the private sector, and multilateral institutions.

Deputy Administrator Coleman and President Abinader discussed opportunities to boost inclusive economic growth through support for small and medium-sized enterprises, women-owned businesses, entrepreneurship, and trade. The Deputy Administrator also commended the Dominican Republic for its efforts to combat corruption and promote transparency, and reaffirmed USAID’s commitment to  rule of law and human rights in the Dominican Republic. 

During her visit, the Deputy Administrator participated in a launch event at which she announced USAID’s support, through its EDGE Fund, for a new project implemented by the Global Alliance for Trade Facilitation to enhance inclusive trade and nearshoring opportunities for small- and medium-sized enterprises, including women-owned businesses. She also joined the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation’s (DFC) CEO Scott Nathan at the announcement of a new DFC loan portfolio guarantee in the Dominican Republic, where she delivered remarks to reinforce the United States’ commitment to fostering inclusive economic growth and job creation in the region, bringing more opportunity to all Dominicans.
