The tech industry in Kosovo is witnessing a positive shift as more young women are entering the field, gradually narrowing the gender gap. This is due, in part, to USAID’s efforts to promote the International Day of Girls in ICT, which has inspired young women to pursue careers in the ICT sector and help stimulate job growth in this thriving and competitive sector.

USAID has been a key supporter of the Girls in ICT Day event since its launch in 2014, and this year their week-long activities garnered an impressive participation of over 5,000 individuals, making it the largest and most successful Girls in ICT Day event in Kosovo to date.

The highlight of the event was a groundbreaking gaming tournament, called ‘GameHERs Unleashed’, which was organized for girls and young women in e-sports. Collaboratively arranged by the Kosovo Association of Information and Communication Technology (STIKK) and XportalEsports, the tournament promoted gender diversity and inclusion in the gaming industry.  It provided a platform for 24 talented participants to compete for prizes and scholarships sponsored by local women-led companies.

"Traditionally, the gaming industry has been male-dominated, and female gamers often faced challenges in gaining recognition and acceptance within the gaming community. However, this event shattered barriers and promoted gender equality in gaming, making us feel empowered," said Blerine Thaci, one of the participants. "I believe more activities like this should be organized. Engaging in gaming-related events can foster diversity, inclusion, and encourage girls to explore their interests, discover their strengths, and develop new skills.”

In addition to gaming tournaments, the Girls in ICT week provided over 65 young women with the opportunity to visit successful women-led ICT companies such as Polar Bear Agency, MetDaan, and SQA Consulting. These visits enabled the participants to learn from accomplished women in the industry, gaining valuable insights and inspiration for their own career paths.

Overall, the Girls in ICT week in Kosovo served as a source of inspiration and motivation for girls and women pursuing careers in the ICT industry. Through collaborations with local partners, including STIKK and ICK, the USAID Compete Activity is actively promoting education and careers in ICT among girls and women. Their collective efforts aim to break down barriers, foster inclusivity, and create a more diverse and empowering environment within the sector.
