In a world where information is power, the absence of reliable data is a crucial obstacle to progress. In Kosovo, USAID and Kosovo ICT Association (STIKK) have partnered to ensure that limited data availability and the fragmented nature of information scattered across various institutions, doesn’t hinder the ability of public and private institutions to make informed decisions and plan effectively. This partnership resulted in the establishment of the first Statistical Analytical Unit (SAU) within the Kosovo ICT Association (STIKK) which will identify, collect and analyze data, as well as provide valuable insights into the trends, challenges and developments of the ICT sector in Kosovo including relevant information the Statistical Agency of Kosovo, Central Bank of Kosovo, Kosovo Customs, Tax Administration, Business Registration Agency, STIKK member companies, and ICT stakeholders.
“The data we prepare helps us understand what is happening in this sector and what measures to take for its future development,” says Gramos Surkishi, STIKK’s Senior Researcher. So far, the Unit has carried out various successful statistical analyses, including the forthcoming IT Barometer which provides an annual overview of Kosovo’s IT sector, as well as other analyses based on member, donor, government, and institutional requests.
Vjollca Çavolli, STIKK’s Executive Director, considers it necessary for every business association to establish such a unit as “it is a significant indicator of business development in Kosovo. It is a foundation, a platform on which a comprehensive business development plan is built.” By providing benefits and added value for current and prospective STIKK members, the Statistical Analytical Unit is becoming self-sustainable. Its value has also been noticed by other sectors, who are seeking to establish similar statistical units within their associations, resulting in a crowding-in effect.
