In recent years, the demand for prefabricated (prefab) homes has surged due to their emphasis on efficiency, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness as a modern construction approach. Recognizing the potential for growth in this sector, Kosovo entrepreneurs, with USAID support have embraced the demand, emerging as promising players in the prefab homes industry. Notably, data from Kosovo Customs reveals a remarkable 126% increase in exports of Kosovo-made prefab homes over the past two years, with exports exceeding €8.2 million in 2022 alone. This robust growth demonstrates Kosovo's improving reputation as a competitive player in international markets.

To further support the sector, USAID, through the Kosovo Compete Activity, is facilitating expansion of local prefab companies into new export markets by enabling their participation in international trade fairs. This year marked the first participation of Kosovo prefab home manufacturers in key international fairs, including the World of Prefab 2023 held in the U.S. and the Zagreb Home Expo in Croatia. These fairs provided a platform for Kosovo's prefab companies to showcase their innovative designs and high-quality craftsmanship, opening doors to entirely new markets.

“We’ve participated in numerous fairs and exhibitions across Europe, but we have never witnessed such a surge of interested parties genuinely discussing potential projects,” said Nazmi Mehmetaj, Sales Director at prefab building manufacturer Greenhouse. The exhibitions not only attracted significant attention but also resulted in potential export deals.

“I would never have believed that we could negotiate a contract for 37 houses with a potential client whom we met for just 10 minutes during the expo,” added Ridvan Raimi, Executive Director of Eco Hause, who participated in the Zagreb Home Expo in Croatia. Both Greenhouse and Eco Hause are currently in negotiations for over 100 prefab units, primarily targeting the tourism industry in Croatia.

Through exposure and face-to-face interactions and demonstrations, Kosovo's prefab companies have successfully instilled confidence in potential partners, showcasing the quality, durability, and efficiency of their products. As the prefab homes industry continues to grow globally, Kosovo's participation in international fairs will remain vital for keeping up with industry trends, innovations, and sustainable practices while solidifying its position in the international market.

The ongoing support from USAID Kosovo Compete Activity will play a pivotal role in nurturing and expanding the prefab homes sector, empowering local companies to thrive in a competitive global landscape.
