Overview:
USAID/Jamaica remains committed to supporting the country and people of Jamaica. USAID helps Jamaica capitalize upon its advanced levels of commitment and capacity to address outstanding development challenges that impede further progress.  Areas of focus include: Citizen Security, Disaster Risk Reduction, HIV/AIDS and the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

Citizen Security

Project Overview:This activity supports Jamaican target communities, parents, and families to prevent youth violence through activities such as school safety programs, parenting interventions, conflict resolution sessions, and technical and vocational training.

Development Credit Authority (DCA)
Country: Jamaica
Duration: 2015 –2023

Project Overview:
The Development Credit Authority (DCA) aims to strengthen the ability of partner financial institutions to provide loans to micro-enterprises and micro-entrepreneurs in Jamaica, with special emphasis on targeting new borrowers and new business in high-risk Jamaican communities thereby supporting livelihoods in the Mission's target demographic.

Local Partner Development (LPD) Activity

Project Overview:
This activity focuses on building the capacity of Jamaican institutions, civil society organizations (CSOs) and key public and private partners to become more effective in advancing collaborative, evidence-based youth crime and violence prevention strategies that mobilize and sustain targeted secondary and tertiary prevention efforts.

Strengthening Jamaica’s Electoral Democracy

Project Overview:
This activity promotes political accountability on the part of Jamaican political parties and candidates, increases voter knowledge of political parties’ programs, and improves citizens’ participation in elections.

Strengthening Community Structures Support to Upscale LGBT
Country: Jamaica
Duration: 2021 –2023

Project Overview:
Jamaica has high levels of stigma and discrimination surrounding the LGBT community. USAID stands committed to supporting the human rights of LGBT individuals in Jamaica and globally.  This activity does so through the pursuit of  three major objectives:

  • LGBT persons in Jamaica feel a greater sense of belonging within the LGBT community and are more willing to participate in advocacy initiatives
  • LGBT persons in need of shelter and other forms of support are readily connected to those services through a 24-hour helpline.
  • There is greater awareness among politicians, parliamentarians, labor unionists and the wider public of the importance of respect and inclusion of and tolerance for the LGBT community.

Violence Prevention in Targeted Vulnerable Communities & Schools in Jamaica

Project Overview:This Government to Government (G2G) activity will support collaboration between communities and police to increase citizen security and reduce homicide levels in targeted communities. The activity will improve police-youth relations, encouraging tolerance, appreciation of the law, and behavior that reduces violence and promotes community safety.

Disaster Risk Reduction & Energy Resilience

Disaster Risk Financing

Project Overview:
Jamaica’s vulnerability to natural disasters threatens the country’s development gains. To preserve these gains and to further Jamaica’s self-reliance, USAID/Jamaica has rallied donors to crowd in capital in support of a cross-sectoral financial resilience strategy.

Project Overview:
This new activity expands renewable energy technology availability and accessibility for businesses in key Jamaican sectors including tourism and manufacturing.

USAID-NREL Partnership Jamaica

Project Overview:
This activity is focusing on the energy resilience of Jamaica’s critical infrastructure, which is essential to effective relief and recovery operations. This includes shelters, police stations, fire stations, hospitals, marshalling sites, and emergency operations centers.

Project Overview:
The Development Credit Authority (DCA) will increase access to finance for individuals, households, SMEs, entrepreneurs, and companies across the Caribbean region (Jamaica, the Eastern and Southern Caribbean) pursuing renewable energy sector endeavors.

President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief

Project Overview:
The U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is the U.S. Government initiative to help save the lives of those suffering from HIV/AIDS around the world. This historic commitment is the largest by any nation to combat a single disease internationally, and PEPFAR investments also help alleviate suffering from other diseases across the global health spectrum. PEPFAR is driven by a shared responsibility among donor and partner nations and others to make smart investments to save lives.

Controlling the HIV Epidemic

Project Overview:
To reach epidemic control, Jamaica AIDS Support for Life (JASL) aims to addresses key barriers across the HIV continuum of care. The main objectives of the program are: 1) finding the undiagnosed persons living with HIV (PLHIV); 2) initiating on antiretroviral therapy (ART) for persons diagnosed but not on treatment; and 3) achieving viral suppression for persons on ART. 

Health Connect Jamaica

Project Overview: The Health Connect Jamaica activity brings Jamaica’s private sector healthcare providers into national HIV epidemic control efforts. Health Connect Jamaica is building a network of clinicians that target HIV/AIDS patients.

PAN Caribbean Partnership for HIV/AIDS (PANCAP)
Country: Regional
Duration: 2021 –2024

Project Overview:
USAID’s support to PANCAP provides technical guidance and best practices to Caribbean countries seeking to achieve epidemic control and it contributes to regional uptake of PEPFAR’s minimum program requirements.

COVID-19 Emergency Support
Country: Jamaica
Duration: 2020 –2022

Project Overview:
Since the onset of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in 2020, USAID has provided more than $7.5 million in direct COVID-19 relief to Jamaica, including support for Jamaica’s efforts to vaccinate people quickly and safely. In addition, support has been given to public education, critical and emergency services and equipment, educational tools in the absence of face-to-face classes, and assistance to vulnerable youth, families, and communities--addressing issues such as child abuse and domestic violence.
