Through this project, USAID funds the construction of the Satpara Dam, a multipurpose water and power facility at the edge of the Skardu City in GilgitBaltistan near the border with China and India. USAID funds the completion of the dam, power houses 1 and 2, as well as construction of power houses 3 and 4 and two main distributory water channels. The completion of the Satpara Dam aims to add 17.6 megawatts of power generating capacity to the local power grid enough power to supply electricity to about 40,000 households. The dam will also mitigate flooding in the region, store water to irrigate downstream land, and provide
3.1 million gallons per day of water for domestic use.

OBJECTIVES

The main objective of the Satpara Dam and Irrigation Project is to mitigate the energy shortage in GilgitBaltistan by adding 17.6 megawatts to the local power grid.

MAIN ACTIVITIES

Fund the completion of civil engineering, mechanical, and electrical components of the dam structures, power houses 3 and 4, and major canals of the irrigation system.

RESULTS TO DATE
  • The dam and all four power houses have been completed, enabling the generation of 17.6 megawatts of power; this amount is sufficient to supply power continuously to approximately 40,000 families. The dam has also improved the availability of drinking water for the city of Sakrdu and is protecting the downstream areas from flooding.
  • Distributary canals have been completed and are already delivering water to adjacent farms.
