Bujumbura, Burundi – April 11, 2024 – The U.S. Embassy in Bujumbura is pleased to announce new funding of almost US $1 million to support the efforts of the Bureau Central de Recensement (BCR) as it conducts the 2024 national population and housing census.

The funds will augment crucial facets of the census process, including data digitization, secure storage infrastructure, capacity-building for BCR personnel, and the development of sophisticated analytical tools.

The International Programs Center of the U.S. Census Bureau, with its extensive expertise in providing technical assistance to international statistical agencies on their population censuses, will lend its support through workshops, one-on-one training, and advanced software solutions.

Chargé d’Affaires Keith Gilges said, “A well-executed census is more than just a count; it’s a dataset that presents a snapshot of a nation’s social reality.  It lays the groundwork for informed governance, strategic planning, and the equitable allocation of resources.  The United States government supports the government and people of Burundi in a wide range of areas from health to education to economic development, and we are proud to support Burundi’s vital national census project.”

The collaboration between the U.S. Embassy and the BCR underscores a collective dedication to fostering sustainable growth and prosperity in Burundi.  This partnership stands as a testament to the enduring bond between the United States and Burundi, symbolizing a shared pursuit of progress and advancement.
