TIRANA, JANUARY 28, 2015—Today, more than one hundred people showed up for the screening of a new documentary, “Economic Empowerment of People with Disabilities through Employment,” a film about a unique program that has helped people with disabilities in Albania overcome isolation and prejudice and enter into the country’s labor workforce. The film was introduced by USAID Country Representative, Marcus Johnson, the Minister of Social Welfare and Youth, Mr. Erion Veliaj and Blerta Çani, ADRF Executive Director.

Since October 2010, USAID has supported the Albanian Disability Rights Foundation (ADRF) to identify issues related to lack of employment for people with disability, roughly 6.2%[1] of the population, and to work on creating opportunities of employment especially for young disabled people with special focus on women in Tirana, Elbasan and Shkodra.

USAID Presents Successful Hospital Quality Improvement Initiatives to Ministry of Health and Stakeholders

SEPTEMBER 27, 2012     Today the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the USAID’s Enabling Equitable Health Reforms project, organized a round table with the Health Reform Implementation Support Group to present successful hospital management improvement initiatives implemented in three pilot hospitals in Albania.   Minister of Health Mr. Vangjel Tavo, chairman of the Group, and the USAID Mission Director, Mr. Jim Barnhart,  delivered remarks at the opening of the meeting.

SEPTEMBER 25, 2012     The Agriculture University of Tirana (AUT) awarded today Dr. Catherine Chan-Halbrendt, Chair of the Department of Natural Resource and Environmental Management, from the University of Hawaii, the title of ‘Honoris Causa,’ the highest award in academia, for her work in support the school’s Faculty of Economy and Agribusiness.

SEPTEMBER 20, 2012     On Thursday, USAID, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports, and the Albanian Tourism Association (ATA) awarded gold, silver, and bronze Authentic Albania Quality Mark Awards to the seven tourism businesses participating in the USG-funded program – Albania’s first initiative to rate accommodation facilities.   Since the program began in 2011, 56 hotels have become paying members of the ATA, requested an assessment of their businesses, and been awarded the Quality Mark.  The program helps entrepreneurs set quality hotel standards that, in turn, furthers buil

Through the Development Credit Authority (DCA), USAID is increasing access to credit for agriculture and agribusinesses in Albania.  Through a $15 million agriculture loan agreement between USAID and two local banks, ProCredit and Banka Kombetare Tregtare (BKT), Albanian farmers and small and medium agricultural enterprises (SMEs) will be able to access credit more easily.
