Background

This five-year, $20 million program expands the partnership between the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to improve the quality of life for people in 16 districts of Tajikistan along the country's border with Afghanistan in Khatlon province and Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO).

Improve the performance of small-scale farmers and entrepreneurs.

Key Results

  • 126 new Mahalla Committees established, and 110 existing Mahalla Committees supported, serving over 400,000 community members across Khatlon
  • 26 micro-development projects implemented, reaching more than 45,000 community members
  • 300 community-based savings groups formed, supporting more than 5,300 members with financial literacy, access to financial services, and the accumulation of assets of over $300,000
  • 281 community-based health financing schemes supported, enabling close to 130,000 community members to access around $400,000 in health financing
  • 13 drinking water supply systems constructed, providing access to clean water to more than 43,000 people
  • 13 sanitation systems constructed, providing access to improved sanitation for more than 8,300 schoolchildren and teachers
  • More than 1,100 teachers with improved knowledge on relevance pedagogy and competence-based curriculum delivery
  • 8 blended learning courses for the professional development of teachers developed
  • 57 schools and 57 student councils, serving more than 17,200 students, strengthened with mentoring and technical support
  • 55 early childhood support groups formed, and 8 new early childhood development centers refurbished
  • 236 existing and prospective entrepreneurs successfully completed entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship training
  • Over $620,000 unlocked in commercial and private capital for investments in 29 small and growing businesses, creating 97 new jobs
  • 13 new common interest groups established, and a total of 21 supported with technical assistance and material resources, helping to create 267 jobs
  • 165 producer groups and 33 clusters created, with more than 3,000 smallholder farmers benefitting improved productivity and investments in productive infrastructure
  • 119 investments made in productive infrastructure projects and improved technologies, benefitting over 30,000 people
  • 2 food security research projects completed
  • 1 small 450-kW hydropower plant constructed, serving more than 2,200 people across five villages
