OVERVIEW

USAID’s Urja Nepal is tasked with the goal of providing clean, reliable, and affordable power to all Nepalis. It partners with energy sector experts, private investors, and regulators to enhance grid stability and exponentially increase clean energy generation throughout the country and region.

HIGHLIGHT

USAID’s Urja Nepal continues 8 years of progress that includes mobilizing more than $1.8 billion in energy investments and bringing online more than 1,100 MW of clean electricity generation capacity. This cleaner energy will reduce Nepal’s future greenhouse gas emissions by more than 30 million tons.

USAID Partners with the Government of Nepal to Improve Utility Performance:

USAID works to improve the commercial and operational performance of the energy sector by partnering with Nepal’s electricity utility, the Nepal Electricity Authority, to decentralize the distribution of electricity, improve planning, procurement, operations, and efficiency.

USAID Strengthens the Resilience of Nepal’s Energy Systems:

USAID is optimizing energy planning through the development of an integrated resource and resiliency plan.  This enables decision makers to identify future investments in generation, transmission, and distribution that best meets the forecasted power demand while taking into account costs, reliability, resilience, environmental, and social considerations.

USAID Leverages Private Sector Engagement:

USAID is supporting private sector participation in the energy sector by strengthening the Government of Nepal’s capacity to conduct competitive bidding and procurement of new energy projects that include hydropower, renewable solar, and wind projects.

USAID Advances Cross-Border Trade:

USAID assists in advancing cross-border electricity trade through the development of necessary technical and regulatory systems and power purchase agreements.
