USAID fully considers the potential adverse impact of its programs and projects on the environment, natural resources, and communities of developing countries, and implements measures and monitoring techniques to avoid or mitigate those impacts to the greatest extent possible.
The Environmental Safeguarding Spotlight series highlights USAID’s work around the world. The series demonstrates the solutions USAID implements to mitigate environmental risk and help communities advance in their journey to self-reliance and resilience. These accomplishments improve local economies and the quality of life for the communities the Agency serves.
Expanding Fish and Agricultural Production in West Africa
In West Africa, USAID provided environmental advisory services to improve the design of a project under the USAID co-funded Securing Water for Food (SWFF) program. SkyFox Ltd., a SWFF awardee, is producing fish in rehabilitated aquaculture ponds and aboveground geotextile tanks, and re-using the water to irrigate adjacent agricultural fields, thus producing more food with less water.

Constructing Secondary Schools in Malawi for Female Education
To help address the undereducation of teenage girls in Malawi, the USAID/Malawi “Let Girls Learn” project constructed new secondary schools and a 50-bed female dormitory and teacher housing. The project also constructed and rehabilitated small-scale water and sanitation infrastructure to support the schools.

Advancing Agriculture and Protecting Endangered Macaws in Bolivia
In Torotoro, Bolivia, USAID provided technical assistance on agricultural activities in exchange for farmers’ commitment to protect the endangered red-fronted macaw. By managing erosion, inconsistent rainfall, and deforestation, USAID supported work that increased household income, reduced child malnutrition, and increased sustainable conservation for that region.
