The USAID Evidence for Health project is designed to strengthen overall monitoring, evaluation, and research in Zambia’s health sector for improved evidence-based decision-making and planning.
A quality health management information system (HMIS) ensures the production, analysis, dissemination, and use of reliable and timely information related to health determinants, health systems performance, and health status. The HMIS uses data from routine service and administrative records so that health workers can more easily review and monitor key indicators for their patients such as the number of patients on life-saving HIV treatment, the number of women of reproductive age accessing family planning, and the number of women delivering babies in a health facility. Health workers use these data to improve health program implementation.
GOALS
GOAL ONE
Strengthen the national health management information system (HMIS) owned and managed by the Government of the Republic of Zambia’s Ministry of Health (MoH).
GOAL TWO
Support the improvement of HMIS data collection, analysis, dissemination, and use of policies and standards of practice at all levels.
GOAL THREE
Support USAID/Zambia to expand the evidence base for existing USAID health programming approaches in areas such as malaria, nutrition, family planning, maternal/child health, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS.
KEY RESULTS FOR 2023
- Through USAID support, the project provided technical assistance for the development of a clearly articulated interoperability strategy. The strategy included clear milestones for achieving health information system interoperability.
- The project provided technical assistance to the MoH to help develop the Zambia Health Facility Record (ZHFR) which included standard operating procedures for system use and maintenance. It serves as the authoritative inventory of all health facilities in Zambia and is the cornerstone of health information system interoperability.
