USAID/Zambia Partners in Development Handbook - June 2022

Speeches Shim

On behalf of the American People, we promote and demonstrate democratic values abroad, and advance a free, peaceful, and prosperous world. In support of America's foreign policy, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) leads the U.S. Government's international development and disaster assistance through partnerships and investments that save lives, reduce poverty, strengthen democratic governance, and help people emerge from humanitarian crises and progress beyond

Zambia has made significant strides to improve the quality of life for its people by achieving key milestones in the fight against HIV and AIDS, improving life expectancy, increasing literacy, and reducing poverty, particularly within rural communities. Despite these successes, Zambia’s overall development and economy has stalled in recent years.

The COVID-19 pandemic has further impacted an economy already weakened by unsustainable fiscal policies, degradation of natural resources, lack of core foundational skills for students, and poor quality health care. Faced with these and other economic and social challenges, Zambia still has the potential to resume its status as a beacon of democracy in sub-Saharan Africa and as a nation bolstered by a burgeoning middle-income economy. This is in part due to the successful democratic elections in August 2021, which resulted in a peaceful transition of governmental leadership, and Zambia’s large youth population seeking employment opportunities, quality health care and other social services, and greater accountability from government institutions and elected leaders.

USAID’s 2019-2024 $1.9 billion development strategy partners with the Zambian government, private sector, and civil society to continue Zambia’s journey to become a more prosperous, independent, and resilient country. With a staff of 123 professionals managing annual investments of over ZMW5.5 billion ($340 million), USAID partnerships are advancing effective, citizen-responsive governance; enterprise-driven economic growth; sustainable natural resource management; quality primary education services and health care systems across Zambia.

This handbook provides a brief overview of the current and recently culminated activities associated with the USAID mission in Zambia.
