Kevin Brownawell
Acting Deputy Assistant to the Administrator

In August 2017, Kevin Brownawell joined USAID’s Office of Afghanistan and Pakistan Affairs as the Acting Deputy Assistant to the Administrator.

Previously, he served in USAID/Pakistan as the Deputy Mission Director for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Prior to that from 2012 to February 2015 he was Director of USAID’s Office of Energy and Infrastructure, which included world-wide responsibilities for Engineering and Urban Services, Information and Communications Technology, and Energy.

During the spring of 2012, Mr. Brownawell was USAID’s first Professional-in-Residence at the United States Institute of Peace. From 2010 to 2011, he served as Deputy Mission Director of USAID/Afghanistan. Before his post in Kabul, he was Director of the Office of Strategic Planning and Operations for USAID’s Middle East and Asia Bureaus. From 1995 to 2006, he held a number of positions in the Bureau for Europe and Eurasia’s Office of Program Coordination and Strategy.

Mr. Brownawell holds a M.A. in European Studies and International Economics from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, and a B.S. in Political Science from American University. His academic background includes overseas study in Vienna, Austria and Bologna, Italy.
